I've been a bit neglectful! New posts to start again soon.

We have been busy doing a major move for my Mother In Law, who is legally blind, deaf without her hearing aids, and has mild dementia.  She is pretty adverse to change, but decided she wanted to leave Saginaw and come to live in a new assisted living apartment home near us.  Yeah for us, as we no longer have to drive 100 miles each way to visit her every two weeks!  It has been four weeks of work to find the right place, drive up pack, dive back again and pack, move, and then spend days unpacking her entire new apartment and finding places for all of the things she decided or we decided to keep.  She went from a 2 bedrooms to a 1 bedroom.  She is doing pretty well all things considered, our holidays have been committed to her.

I've neglected my blogging.  I'm sorry I haven't been able to new things posted here.  I should be able to get back to it soon!

In the mean time, be sure to visit Good Reads and look up books and then giveaways.  You can register to win books!  Also visit Fresh Fiction and Writerspace.  Those are new places contests  have been posted for the next month of January.

I'll be back here in January 2010 to start posting new contests as I find them.  In the meantime those I've given you and the rest of the holiday season should keep you busy!

Thanks and best wishes!
Brenda

Pencil Me In Cosmetics Eyeliner Pencils Review

I entered a contest recently, for a free eyeliner pencil. The company contacted me to see if I wanted to buy any since I hadn't won. They sell for $6.99 each. I told them I have numerous allergies to various things found in different make ups and didn't want to pay to have any shipped to me, unless I was sure they weren't going to cause a reaction. They sent me one!

The eye pencils are longer than most, which means they last longer. They have a built in sharpener in the cap which is a really nifty and a well thought out feature. I know I've had to search for my sharpeners before.

These eye pencils glide on nicely, and are long lasting as they are heavily pigmented. The pencils are infused with vitamins and anti-oxidants. The pencil can be smudged for a nice color smear if you want that look. What I find unusual is the colors the pencils come in, many colors I've never seen in the stores for sale. They don't wear off easily either.

For my friends that compete in dance competitions they would find these pencils really handy, due to the unusual colors that can be matched to their costumes.

Obviously I had no reaction to the pencil, I loved it, and am thinking of purchasing a few in different colors. If you would like to take a look at the site where you can order the eye pencils, stop by their site. They are offering my dance friends a special!

Buy 2, Get 1 Free. Buy 4, get 2 free, and so on. To take advantage of the promotional offer log onto: www.pencilmeincosmetics.com or www.graffetch.com and choose the pencil colors that you would like to purchase then proceed to the shopping cart page. The cost for each pencil is $6.99. On the shopping cart page you will see in purple a link for this promotion. Click on it. The user name and password for this section is the same word: Internet

Choose your free pencils and proceed to check out.

A modern interpretation of $lt;i>Les Miserables$lt;/i>, the story follows a dilapidated RV rambling cross-country with June Bug and her father, a man running from a haunted past. Title: Julie and Julia
Author: Julie Powell

Summary:
Julie & Julia is the story of Julie Powell's attempt to revitalize her marriage, restore her ambition, and save her soul by cooking all 524 recipes in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volume I, in a period of 365 days. The result is a masterful medley of Bridget Jones' Diary meets Like Water for Chocolate, mixed with a healthy dose of original wit, warmth, and inspiration that sets this memoir apart from most tales of personal redemption.
When we first meet Julie, she's a frustrated temp-to-perm secretary who slaves away at a thankless job, only to return to an equally demoralizing apartment in the outer boroughs of Manhattan each evening. At the urging of Eric, her devoted and slightly geeky husband, she decides to start a blog that will chronicle what she dubs the "Julie/Julia Project." What follows is a year of butter-drenched meals that will both necessitate the wearing of an unbearably uncomfortable girdle on the hottest night of the year, as well as the realization that life is what you make of it and joy is not as impossible a quest as it may seem, even when it's -10 degrees out and your pipes are frozen.

Inspired and encouraging, Julie and Julia is a unique opportunity to join one woman's attempt to change her life, and have a laugh, or ten, along the way.
Guest Post by Eddie Godshalk at Simply Stacie

Home buyers and investors often make their home purchase and property investment decisions based solely on appraisals and MLS-based information about housing prices. They assume that those sources provide accurate and reliable information that reflects the true market value of the properties they intend to buy, and all relevant current local information. However, this assumption is very incorrect.

Appraisers have been under tremendous pressures from mortgage brokers to overstate home values. These pressures were especially evident during the past decade, given the exceptionally aggressive mortgage lending that lead to the creation of the housing bubble. As appraisers receive over 95 per cent of requests for their services from mortgage brokers, it is obvious that many succumb to the pressures and artificially inflate housing prices. Moreover, appraiser can inflate home values by ignoring problems or comparing appraised homes with inappropriate comparators. As a result, if they rely on appraisals alone, home buyers may actually pay more for a home than what a home is actually worth. And in fact, many buyers actually did.

The Home Value Predictor™, which looks at current local socio-economic, demographic, and financial forces behind the changes in home values at the block level, is thus a more reliable indicator of actual values of homes at any particular time in any specific local market. It is also more useful as a decision-making tool than the information provided from appraisers or MLS sources because it offers a perspective into future trends in housing prices.

More in my new book The Missing Keys to Thriving in Any Real Estate Market.

About the Book:

Title: The Missing Keys to Thriving in Any Real Estate Market

Author: Eddie Godshalk

Eddie Godshalk, author of “The Missing Keys to Thriving in Any Real Estate Market” reveals the information that was missing, that caused the housing and financial crisis. There are over 350,000 markets in the US. Have you ever wondered where to find current local information?

The current housing crisis is caused by a lack of quality relevant local information and a lack of due diligence on loans and loan packages (MBS). Can the sub-prime housing market crash occur again in your town? Noted Real Estate author, analyst and lecturer Eddie Godshalk, fore-warns that the answer is yes, because the loan approval process is currently encapsulated with only a few profiles of three to six month old data. There is no consolidation of local meaningful data to mitigate risk. “To conduct meaningful real estate due diligence, you need to know how one block compares to another block and the surrounding blocks and use updated current information,” states Eddie Godshalk, Author of The Missing Keys to Thriving in Any Real Estate Market and CEO of Silicon Valley, basedValue Predictor, LLC.

Be a Winner - Megan Hart

So I realized I have a new book coming out in just a few days (though I know there are people who have found it out there in the wild already) and I figured I should probably get the word out. So, here’s the deal…I’m going to give away 15 copies of the book! Pleasure and Purpose! How can you get one?

Be one of the first 15 to feature the book trailer for Pleasure and Purpose on your blog or website! That’s it. Easy.

Here’s what you do: embed the code for the trailer (find it at http://blip.tv/file/2473582) and send me the link to your entry at readinbed AT gmail.com with CONTEST in the subject– I’ll reply with what number you are. If you’re in the first 15, you get a copy of Pleasure and Purpose and I’ll send it to you when I get my copies. (I don’t know when it will be, probably sometime in September.)

If you’re not in the first 15, don’t fear. For everyone who features the video on their websites or blogs after the first 15, you’ll be entered into a drawing to also win a copy of Pleasure and Purpose.

Contest ends one week from today, September 4th, and I’ll let you know if you won a few days after that! To Enter Go TO Megan Harts Blog -

Contest with Maria V. Snyder

Guest Blog, Chat and Contest with Author Maria V. Snyder

Posted: 01 Sep 2009 07:59 AM PDT

Maria is giving away FIFTEEN autographed copies of Sea Glass 13 to US readers and 2 international readers.

Hello All!

Thanks to Rachel and everyone at Bitten by Books for having me back! I’m thrilled to be here again, and this time we’re celebrating my latest release, Sea Glass! This is the second book in the Glass series and the story picks up right where Storm Glass (Glass Book #1) left off. I always wrap up a main plot line in all my books regardless of where they are in the series, but Sea Glass is closely tied to Storm Glass and I suggest you read Storm Glass first.

Sea Glass further explores Opal’s glass magic and explains more about the illegal blood magic. In my world, a person’s soul is a magical energy. Everyone has a soul, therefore everyone has magic. However, only magicians can draw in threads of magic from the blanket of power that covers the world. When they pull this extra power, they can use it to light fires, move objects, read another’s mind, to heal, etc… And a few, like the Master Magicians can do all of them. Opal can’t use her magic to do any of the things listed, but she can trap it in glass. This trapped magic, can then be used by other magicians.

Blood magic is similar to Opal’s glass magic. Instead of trapping magic in glass, it traps magic in the magician’s own blood. Then the blood can be drawn and when it is injected into another, that person can become a magician. If they are already a magician, then the blood will make them more powerful. The Daviian Warpers mixed the blood with ink and tattoo it into their skin to increase their magic. Eventually, and with enough blood, a person could achieve enough power to be a Master Magician.

So why are there only three Master Magicians in Sitia? Blood magic is very addictive. Once a person starts using it, he desires more and will do anything to get it. Outlawed long ago, the various rituals needed to use blood magic were eventually forgotten. Until a Daviian Warper learned the steps from the Fire Warper, who had been banished to the fire world a long time ago.

It wasn’t until after I had created this blood magic that I realized how closely the addictive nature of it resembles today’s illegal drugs. But unlike drugs, blood magic gives a person the ability to do magic.

If blood magic wasn’t addictive – would you want to have magic? If so, what would you do with your power?

Win a year's supply of Pond's Wet Cleansing TowelettesWritten by JenniferD
Summer's not quite over yet. In fact, where I live here in Connecticut, summer didn't really kick in this year until August, and I have a feeling it will be going strong through September.

We did have a chance to get away several times throughout the summer season. One product I've found that is so helpful to tuck away into my overnight bag is the Pond's Wet Cleansing Towelettes. Especially with the airport regulations, sometimes taking along your regular cleansing products when you are on vacation just isn't an option. These towelettes remove all make-up (including waterproof mascara), and leave my skin feeling completely clean but not dried out.

In fact, I enjoy them so much that I don't only use them as a convenient travel item. Many of you might take care of your skin better than I do, but honestly at the end of the day, sometimes the idea of washing and rinsing and moisturizing is just more than I want to do. I'm tired, and want to jump into bed, not wake myself up by splashing water on my face! The Pond's Wet Cleansing Towelettes come in handy for this. I can still take care of my skin by removing my makeup in a very simple way.

In addition, they have products that are meant to care for your skin, in addition to the Original Clean, including Microdermabrasion, and Age-Defying formulas.

Visit the Pond's website to find out more about each of these products. You can also download a $1.50 coupon.

The prize package of "Summer Essentials" has a retail value of approximately $320! One of you will win

a year's supply of Pond's Towelettes
a Nantucket Basket Weave Tote and a Nantucket Cosmetic Bag

One of you will win this great prize package from Pond's (U.S Residents only). Leave a comment by September 11 if you'd like to win. We will announce the winners on September 12.

As always, don't forget to earn more entries: subscribe to our Feed, sign up for our 5M4M Newsletter, add our 5M4Giveaways button in your sidebar, write a post and link back to this contest on your blog, and spread the word via Facebook, Twitter, or email! Li'L Inspirations and Lots of Love
Written by Erica
Did you have a blanket or stuffed animal that you were attached to as a child? I had a stuffed rabbit that I carried around with me everywhere. I remember even as a teenager I kept it on a shelf in my closet, because I couldn't bear to part with it.

I love watching my 16-month-old son snuggle with his new lovey, the Happy Monkey Security Blanket from Li'l Inspirations.

Made from minky and satin, it's perfect to lay his head against, while resting in his crib. It's so soft, I even catch myself sometimes rubbing it up against my face. It must be so comforting for him.

The blanket measures 23" x 20", making it larger than similar products you can find in stores - that seem to be the size of a folded handkerchief.

The security blanket can also be personalized with the child's first name, making it such a darling baby shower gift.

There are four adorable Personalized Baby Blankets to choose from. There's the Happy Monkey, Blue Puppy, Sleepy Lamb and Pink Puppy. My husband actually uses the nickname, "monkey", every now and then with our 16-month-old, so I just had to choose the Monkey blanket to review. I also had his name embroidered onto it, which truly is such a nice touch.

I was sent the Gift Set, which included a small monkey rattle with velcro closure. The rattle can attach to his blanket or stroller. I can also secure it around his ankle. Since my son is chewing on most everything these days, I love that both the rattle and the monkey on his blanket, have embroidered facial features.

The Personalized Security Baby Blanket Gift Set truly is unique. What a great keepsake for the mom-to-be or child in your life. We have one gift set, retail value $26.95, to give away to one lucky reader.

You will have your choice of the happy monkey, blue puppy, pink puppy or sleepy lamb. Your blanket can be personalized and there are several fonts and thread colors to choose from. Your blanket gift set will also come with a detachable rattle.

To enter, please leave a comment below. In your comment, feel free to share about the blanket or stuffed animal that you were attached to as a child.

And don’t forget - you can get extra entries in our giveaways… If you already subscribe to our newsletter and/or our RSS feed and/or have our button on your site, you qualify for additional entries. Also, if you tweet or spread the word via facebook, your blog, etc., just leave additional comments letting us know and you will have additional entries. (Your comments are your entries. One tweet per giveaway, please.) Please see our site's Terms and Conditions of Use for a complete list of our contest and giveaway rules.

This giveaway is open to US shipping addresses only and closes on Friday, September 11th. We will announce our winner on Saturday, September 12th.

Park Avenue Princess Giveaway!

How To Be A Hepburn In A Hilton World
By: Jordan Christy
Publisher: Center Street
Available: August 13, 2009
Type: Hardcover
Pages: 208
Genre: YA Self-Help

My Rating:

About the book:

How to Be a Hepburn in a Hilton World by Jordan Christy The Art of Living with Style, Class, and Grace.

This smart and sassy guide shows young women how to find their own glamorous style, professional success, and love with class and grace.

In a society driven by celebutante news and myspace.com profiles, women of class, style, and charm are hard to come by. But as thongs, rehab, and outrageous behavior burn up the daily headlines, employers still like to see a tailored suit, men still want women they can take home to their moms, and peers still respect professional conduct.

Christy helps women channel their inner Kate or Audrey, dusting off old-fashioned virtues and giving them a whole new spin in today’s sexed-up culture.

She shows how modern women can be beautiful, intelligent, and have it all — glamorous style, professional success, and true love and keep their values and morals intact along the way.

Thoughts:

Let's face it, in a world of short skirts, belly rings, g-strings and low-as-you-go jeans, there seems to be a lack of classic and classy role models for young women to look up to! Now, this is just my opinion, but when was the last time you saw Ms. Spears in a strand of pearls? A (very) little black dress...yes, the fore mentioned? A resounding "NO"!! Well not any more, thanks to author Jordan Christy. who passes along many positive qualities that should be instilled in today's young women!

When I first saw this book, I couldn't resist it. The cover and title alone will draw you in! Being the girlie girl that I am and Loving Classy Iconic women like Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Jackie O., there was simply no way I could pass on this self-help book like no other!

While it's aimed at a YA audience, it easily will appeal to women of all ages. The writing style is fun and free which makes it an easy read from cover to cover. I read it all in one sitting. Some of my favorite chapters included "Keep your Chin Up and Your Skirt Down" (which speaks in volumes itself)and "Let Him Come Calling" - a guide to dating of sorts. It reminded me of "The Rules" but for a new, younger generation.

This book basically takes a fluffy read and makes it into a serious lesson. Young women should be self-confident, strong and most of all to respectful of themselves. The last above all else. The resounding message that goes on throughout this book is as timeless, classy and unforgettable as Audrey herself. I couldn't put this book down.

About Author Jordan Christy:

Jordan Christy is a publicist for Warner Bros. Records and has worked with dozens of artists and celebrities, in addition to various TV and media outlets. She has also written for local and national fashion magazines and music trade publications. She currently lives in Nashville, TN with her husband Drew.

Freebie Friday: Memory Keepers Daughter by Kim Edwards
Posted on August 21, 2009 by Bookjourney
For Freebie Friday I usually try to pick a book that has something to do with the season we are in, or current world happenings… but today… well today… I chose this book because it is a good read and I have an extra copy that needs a good home.

Todays Freebie Friday is The Memory Keepers daughter by Kim Edwards.

his stunning novel begins on a winter night in 1964, when a blizzard forces Dr. David Henry to deliver his own twins.
His son, born first, is perfectly healthy, but the doctor immediately recognizes that his daughter has Down syndrome. For motives he tells himself are good, he makes a split-second decision that will haunt all their lives forever. He asks his nurse, Caroline, to take the baby away to an institution. Instead, she disappears into another city to raise the child as her own. Compulsively readable and deeply moving, The Memory Keeper’s Daughter is a brilliantly crafted story of parallel lives, familial secrets, and the redemptive power of love.

Win Tempt the Devil by Anna Campbell

Posted: 23 Aug 2009 05:07 AM PDT

After the success and support of Aussie and NZ Author Week, I am so pleased to announce that the lovely Anna Campbell has offered to giveaway a copy of Tempt the Devil on our blog! *does happy dance*

Queen of Happy Endings reviewed this book and absolutely loved it...although she does recommend reading it in a room with air conditioning because it is hot! Thanks to Anna, you have the chance to win the novel that Romantic Times says 'takes your breath away ... an unforgettable powerhouse romance'.

About Tempt the Devil:

For Olivia Raines, London's most notorious courtesan, and the infamous Julian Southwood, Earl of Erith falling in love will be the greatest risk of all in this wicked and wild romance from Anna Campbell.

Any man in London would worship her. Yet Olivia is, quite frankly, bored of them all. Despite her many dalliances, she's never felt true passion, never longed for any lover's touch . . . until Julian, London's most notoriously wanton rake, decides to make her his mistress.

From the moment he first sees her, Julian knows he must possess her. And when he discovers her greatest secret, a scandal that could ruin her reputation and end her career, he knows just the way to use this damaging information to his most delightful advantage. He offers Olivia a deal with the devil: he'll keep her secret . . . if she allows him the chance to show her true ecstasy.

But Olivia must be careful, for Julian has a secret of his own: he will not rest until she is completely, shamelessly his

HOW IT ENDS: INTERVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

HOW IT ENDS
BY
LAURA WIESS

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Laura Wiess, the acclaimed author who once brought us "a girl to walk alongside Harper Lee's Scout and J. D. Salinger's Phoebe" (Luanne Rice), brings us another memorable young woman, this one at the center of an extraordinary novel of how love ends, how it begins, and what it's worth to protect it...
All Hanna's wanted since sophomore year is Seth. She's gone out with other guys, even gained a rep for being a flirt, all the while hoping cool, guitar-playing Seth will choose her. Then she gets him -- but their relationship is hurtful, stormy and critical, not at all what Hanna thinks a perfect love should be. Bewildered by Seth's treatment of her and in need of understanding, Hanna decides to fulfill her school's community service requirement by spending time with Helen, her terminally ill neighbor, who she's turned to for comfort and wisdom throughout her life. But illness has changed Helen into someone Hanna hardly knows, and her home is not the refuge it once was. Feeling more alone than ever, Hanna gets drawn into an audiobook the older woman is listening to, a fierce, unsettling love story of passion, sacrifice, and devotion. Hanna's fascinated by the idea that such all-encompassing love can truly exist, and without her even realizing it, the story begins to change her.

Until the day when the story becomes all too real...and Hanna's world is spun off its axis by its shattering, irrevocable conclusion.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Laura Wiess is the author of the critically acclaimed novels SUCH A PRETTY GIRL, chosen as one of the ALA's 2008 Best Books for Young Adults and 2008 YALSA Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers, LEFTOVERS, and the recently released HOW IT ENDS. Originally from central Jersey, she traded bumper-to-bumper traffic, excellent pizza, and summer days down the shore for scenic roads, bears, no pizza delivery and the irresistible allure of an old stone house surrounded by forests in Pennsylvania's Endless Mountains Region.

MY INTERVIEW WITH LAURA WIESS

Thank you for agreeing to visit BOOKIN' WITH BINGO and answer a few questions, Laura. So let's start with this:

What have you just finished reading?

Amy Tan's The Opposite of Fate, and I enjoyed it very much. Definitely a keeper.

What books would you say have made the biggest impression on you, especially starting out?

Back when I started the annual Writer's Market and Children's Writer's Market books were godsends, and I practically wore out the pages studying the writing info and markets listed. They helped me no end, along with stacks of other library books on writing and crafting compelling fiction.

Two of my alltime favorites are Stephen King's On Writing and Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird.

I also have a small stack of favorite novels I pick up when I'm in between manuscripts and craving not only a good read but an unofficial refresher course on things like characterization, plot, tone, pacing, and storyline.

What gets you started on a new book? A character or story idea or….?

Usually I see or hear something on the news or in a passing conversation that disturbs and intrigues me, and a vague question forms in my mind. After a while, if the question sharpens and becomes compelling enough, and the subject makes me passionate, a character is born in response. The thing is, she has to be someone I very much want to spend time with, as without a character I care about, someone with alot at stake, there is no story. Give me a character to love and I'll follow them anywhere.

What is something about you that you would want people to know about you that we probably don’t know?

Well, let's see: I love Betsey Johnson shoes, my best friend and I are celebrating our 30th year of friendship this year, and that there's nothing I enjoy more than asking people questions, and hearing their answers. Unless it's being asked questions, of course!

What is your best advice to anyone, including young people, who want to be writers?

Keep writing and learning, and don't give up. It's an ongoing, never-ending process and it's different for everyone. Learn to trust your process. Write what you're passionate about, fall in love with your characters, don't be afraid to rewrite. Just keep going.

When Angelo Riccardi sought revenge Gwenna Hamilton added another, delicious dimension. Innocent and pretty, she had no chance when the Italian tycoon offered her the devil's bargain: pay for her father's freedom with her body.

In her naiveté, Gwenna thought that Angelo would tire of her and her innocence very quickly. But he had more in mind than just one night…
